1.
At what age should we teach our children to do self-breast checks?
Personally, we recommend that girls start doing self-breast checks when they start wearing bras and boys at puberty. This is to help them become comfortable checking themselves while they get to know their own body. Knowing your own body helps to find abnormalities.

2. How can I get childcare for my child while I am in treatment?
I spoke with the Missouri State Childcare Licensing Bureau. We now have a copy of the Rule Book and forms. Patients can now get part-time care for their children during treatment.
Please contact us to get information about acquiring a daycare facility in your area.

3. Can antiperspirants or deodorants cause breast cancer?
Articles in the press and on the Internet have warned that underarm antiperspirants or deodorants cause breast cancer.  However, researchers at the National Cancer Institute are not aware of any conclusive evidence linking the use of underarm antiperspirants or deodorants and the subsequent development of breast cancer.  The FDA, which regulates food, cosmetics, medicines, and medical devices, also does not have any evidence or research data that ingredients in underarm antiperspirants or deodorants cause cancer.

A donation of cash or check is the easiest way to do the most good with your gift, and is tax deductible. Gift Cards and Gift Certificates are another convenient way of supporting our work. A gift certificate donated to PINK can be used in one of the following ways:
  • The most urgent need is for Pharmacy gift cards to help bridge the rising cost of prescription medication and medical supplies.
  • Food and Retail certificates provide food or services to assist patients during their treatment and recovery. These certificates are also needed for fundraising events, where their value can be multiplied by the generosity of others at the event.
  • Certificates for Day Care and Gas assist patients with child care and transportation cost during treatment.
Also listed, are supplies that are kept in stock since there is a large demand for these items.

We are also in need of:
* Knitted/crocheted lap afghans and hats (or just the yarn for our volunteers to continue making these)
* Ensure
* Antibacterial hand cleaner
* Mild shampoo and conditioner
* Small pillows for under the arm comfort and for seatbelt comfort while in car.

    Guardian Angel Feature Story

    Amy Keith Dodd

    Amy did more than we dared to dream this fall as a Guardian Angel. As a non-survivor, she requested to be the Power of PINK representative for Shawn and Amanda when delivering our care package. Amanda is 30 years old with two small boys in the house (Preston-1 and Parker-5). Amy and Amanda got along great and Amy felt a personal connection to the family. Meeting the family and delivering the care package made The Power of PINK Breast Cancer Foundation feel real to her.  She stated that she finally got to see what we our about and why we exist.

    Coincidently, not long after Amy met Amanda did her employer ask if anyone knew of a family in need that Amy’s department at KCP&L could adopt for Christmas. Amy raised her hand and offered her newly found family in need. Her idea for this family to be adopted was accepted and the race was on. Amy, with the help of her colleagues, raised $1,000 for Amanda’s family at Christmas. $500 was spent in gift cards for gas, groceries, and prescriptions. The rest were clothes, books, toys, etc. as Christmas gifts. I was lucky enough to deliver the Christmas gifts with Amy and her co-worker, Kelly. It was a wonderful sight to see.

    However, there is more to Amy than helping this family. Amy came across a way to get discounted tickets to the Kansas City Chiefs various football games. Beginning with the Jacksonville game and ending with the Raiders game, Amy had sold over 300 Chiefs tickets. Not only did this raise funds for The Power of PINK, many of the volunteers, and their families, got to tailgate and enjoy the game. As the football season comes to a close, I am anxious to see what project Amy tackles next.
